Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire is a feature film that give us an in look of the slums in Mumbai, India. It shows the ups and downs of the slumdog Jamal Malik, his family and friends. The song Kerosene Kid by Jimmy Wayne fits into the lifestyle of the character. The character I have chosen to reflect on is Jamal because his characteristics were easier then most of the characters, and I am very intrigued by his character. The purpose of this assignment is to match lyrics from the song I have chosen to the film, picking details and examples to help for a better understanding.

Jamal is not wealthy, he is being raised in the slums and doesn't have much to live off. The first line of the song is "I know what it's like growin' up poor." This can relate to him because he is poor, and has been his whole life, he does as much as he can with his brother to make money. When Jamal's mother is killed him and his brother are taken in to work for a man who makes them go and bag for money from people in the city. Throughout his life, he is put to the test to meet his needs, from stealing from others and selling what he stole. This all leads to the game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" where he is one question away from winning the show, he tells the host hes not in it for the money, but to see if someone is watching. How does a slum know these answers?

The chours of the song can be used to show many different views from the movie. "Just hold your head up and be proud kerosene kid, they don't understand everythin' we got is a gift." With this we could change the lyrics "kerosene kid" to slumdog, as throughout the movie Jamal is learning to accept who he is. He is proud of himself for overcoming everything he has gone through, and that he ended up on the game show. Towards the end of the movie, and woman stops him and asks him "Are you Jamal, from the game show?" she then begins to say "do us proud slumdog, go all the way and win it." Not only is Jamal proud of himself his community is also proud of him and will support him.

Going back to Jamal's childhood or when he was a teenager he never had the money to buy himself new things. He wore the same clothes until he found some he could steal. Washing was out of the question. The lyrics "Next morning at school in yesterdays clothes," is perfect for him when he went to school he always wore the same thing even if he wore it yesterday. Even after that he still wore the same thing, just because the lyric states school, does not mean we can apply it to anything because we can.

Jamal Malik is a slumdog, who somehow knows all the answers to the questions on a game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." How did he do it? At the beginning of the movie we are given four possible answers a. he cheated b. he is lucky c. he is a genius or d. it is written. Throughout the movie we are shown how he knows the answers and finally we know the truth. My purpose was to use lyrics from a song I chose to compare to parts of the movie. To answer the question we all have how did he do it, well the answer is d. it is written.

Early School Memories

I loved going to elementary, it was the best part of my days, weeks, months and years. School then was simple, everyone was your best friend, grades were all A's and recess was the most important thing to look forward to. I remember wanting to be like the older kids, the ones who paired up with us to read us books, or tell us story's. "They are role models" we thought, "I want to be just like them." My teachers forever have a spot in my memories, I still remember Mrs.Brown and Mrs. Phillips my all time favorite teachers. They were always there when I needed them. In school I was a "Scout" I loved to voice my opinion and never went unheard. I was teased on how I always had to say something, but I didn't care, I wanted my voice heard. I was always in the school plays, and loved to sing and dance. My favourite memory from my early days was when, at play practice all the students hid under the stage, so when the teacher came in no one was there. She even paged all actors to the drama room, so when she came back we all came out and were waiting for her. She was very surprised, we all just laughed. I wish I could relive these days, they were the best.

To A Sad Sister

As I look at you
your nose held high
i give out a smile
but no reply
we use to be so close
now your all grown up
all you do is push me away
i hold onto our younger days
the memories starting to fade
i try to talk to you
you always shut me down
all you say is i cannot wait to leave
when you leave, you leave me
cant you see I'm hurting
can you see I'm sad
I'm your sister
but that doesn't matter to you
your gone, I've lost you
I want people to feel the sadness the sister has towards her older sister, and how she wishes that their relationship could go back to the younger days, when they both loved each other more than ever.

Cooks Brook

Seep into the veins of restless solitude
ambitious, just as wise
and yet the world still sits
the earth still turns
love has not fallen
but yet it has somewhat been
frowned upon.
its just waiting to burst
through in a fiery reign
of destiny, gently rocking your
untamed soul
to suddenly erupt in pain and
torment until it gently rocks you
to sleep but captivating?
Depends on how you overcome
the fear in your heart
as terrifying as it sounds
initiating it is so much
easier than what events
just unfolded

Dreams

As my waking moments are put on the shelf
And i fall into the warmth of myself
visions dance before my eyes
dreams and memories fall and rise
colors and moments enter and leave
like wind blowing the falling leaves

my dreams a safe when I awake
tonight I'll revisit them, for
my dreams are storys
waiting to unfold

Master Piece

Sky high, wings wide

Mother taught me how to fly

Jumping out of the nest to be just like the rest

Got to spread my wings and fly

To get to a new place so I can lye

On my own in this world

New challenges I will find

Digging in the dirt for worms

But sometimes digging doesn’t always work

Up in the trees is where I sit

Listening to my surroundings

Learning a new tune to chirp

I know what I have to do

Considering this is all new

It will take some time to get use too

I chose this piece for my master piece because I think it shows one of my best poems I have written. I am proud of what I wrote and how it turned out. I do believe this is my best work from this portfolio for the reasons its poety. Poety is a free hand writing and you can express any emotion you want too, with no guidelines. This one there was a guideline but I thought it worked well.
